Wow! This is the first post in August…guess why? I went on an author trip to South Dakota to promote my book Sioux Code Talkers of World War II.  The response my SD Book Tour was overwhelming (in a good way) and greatly appreciated.

I’m going to split up the trip into sections.  We saw nearly the whole state on our trip, saw amazing views, and met some wonderful people.

Our first stop was Sioux Falls, SD.  We drove in to meet some people ahead of my presentation and books signing. I’d like to give a huge shout out to Betsy Rice and Jane Healy for organizing the events in Sioux Falls.

I had two radio interviews and a TV interview prior to the evening’s event. These were firsts for me– I had never been in a radio studio before and had never witnessed the behind the scenes of a TV station news program. Both were fascinating to watch.

In the Moment with Lori Walsh

Lori Walsh (SDPB) of In The Moment, actually interviewed me from home, taped and released the radio interview a few days later.  It was quite the experience driving to Sioux Falls listening to the radio interview in our car- another first for me.  Lori is kind, patient, and professional.

Patrick Lalley Show

Patrick Lalley and Dan Peters (KSOO-am) made me feel comfortable in the radio studio. What energy and excitement! They have an incredible job- always on the go, walking me through the plan, the questions, and assuring me they were going to do their job so I wouldn’t have to worry.  I really appreciated their encouragement because this was the first time I was doing a live interview! My husband, aunt, and uncle were in the sound booth.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota

The next day, we explored the beautiful city of Sioux Falls, SD. If you visit, make sure you go to Falls Park and spend some time there.

We also took a trolley ride all around the city, looking at various stops and sculptures on the city sidewalks.  I’m so glad we had the chance to spend time in this lovely city.

KDLT TV

Next, we went to the KDLT studio and met Kelsie Passolt, Megan, and the rest of the team. We watched the flurry of activity behind the scenes, while the team produced the 5pm news.

[P.S. I’ll get back to my school posts after I finish with the book tour posts. Sorry for the mix up- I didn’t forget…]

School Library Journal Review

03/01/2017
Gr 7 Up—This well-documented title vividly brings to life the story of John Bear King and other Sioux code talkers during World War II. What makes this nonfiction text unique is the painstaking detail the author, the great-niece of King, took to research actual coded messages in military archives and transcribe them into the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota languages….The book is engaging from start to finish, with a well-written text that is enhanced by period photographs and reproductions of significant documents. VERDICT A valuable work for teens studying code talkers and American Indian contributions to the U.S. victory in the Pacific theater.—Naomi Caldwell, Alabama State University, Montgomery
